Although “Into the Spider-Verse” was the first film in the franchise’s history, is not the first effort to unite Spider-Man’s many incarnations. There have been several adaptations of the concept in comic books, animations, and video games over the years, but “Into the Spider-Verse” was the first to truly connect with fans worldwide. Incredible financial success, critical acclaim, and a slew of accolades convinced Marvel and Sony to make not one but two further films in the “Spider-Verse” franchise in the coming years: “Across the Spider-Verse” in 2023 and “Beyond the Spider-Verse” in 2024.
In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the relationship between Miles and the other Spider-Men across dimensions is complicated by their efforts to stop Miles’ plan to return to Earth-1610 and save his father from certain death. They fear Miles’ interference with this “canon event” will cause widespread destruction and the loss of many lives.
Fans of the Marvel Comics series admire how faithfully the Spider-Man movies stay to the original material. Fans may be curious about the origin stories of Spider-Man India, the Scarlet Spider, and Peter B. Parker, all of whom appear in Across the Spider-Verse.
As the Spider-Society comes out in full force to try to apprehend Miles Morales, the viewer is treated to the vast bulk of the film’s many Easter eggs and cameos. All the Spider-Man versions from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse are included here.
The Confirmed Spider People in “Across the Spiderverse”
Many more Spider-People make cameo appearances throughout the story of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The most notable of these variations are:
Miles Morales
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a sequel to the 2017 film Spider-Man: Homecoming, with Shameik Moore reprising his role as the voice of Miles Morales. In the film, Miles learns about the Spider Society and the peculiar origins of his superpowers (even for Spider-Man). When Miles’ role in The Spider-Verse is challenged (most notably by Spider-Man 2099), the variations are split into two camps.
In Marvel Comics, Earth-1610 is a pivotal setting, sometimes called the Ultimate Universe. In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Peter Parker from Earth-1610 was killed by the Green Goblin because he was distracted by the arrival of Miles Morales, whom he knew possessed spider powers. After Peter’s death, Miles stepped into the role of Spider-Man, utilizing his abilities to fight crime in New York City.
Spider Gwen
Across the Spider-Verse opens on Earth-65, the origin planet of Gwen Stacy (Spider-Gwen, Ghost-Spider, and Spider-Woman). Earth-65 in Across the Spider-Verse is rendered in a pastel painting style, fitting for Spider-Gwen’s personality. The radioactive spider bite in this universe gave Gwen Stacy her superpowers. Peter Parker, Gwen’s best friend, died after trying to imitate these abilities and turning himself into the Lizard. Despite her suffering, Gwen Stacy has emerged as one of the most powerful Spider-Man clones.
Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman
Jessica Drew, the Spider-Woman of Earth-402, makes her big screen debut in Across the Spider-Verse. She is Marvel’s first pregnant superhero. She first appears to aid Gwen and Miguel in their fight against the Vulture incarnate that has emerged on Earth-65, Gwen’s home planet.
Peter B. Parker
After Peter B. In Into the Spider-Verse, when Peter Parker is sucked into Miles’ dimension, he does not intend to be Miles’ mentor or even help him beat Kingpin. Peter B. Parker isn’t the only Spider-Man in Across the Spider-Verse. Married Mary Jane again and started a family with her. Author: Peter B. desires to want his daughter to emulate Miles’s positive traits.
Mayday Spider-Girl
Mayday transforms into the superhero Spider-Girl in the comics, and it appears that the movie world version of her is on track to do the same, with her acquired superpowers and her adorable mask in the form of a knitted hat. Mayday is a very active youngster who keeps her father on his toes by climbing walls and swinging from webs. She also plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between Peter and Miles, whom Peter reveals he fathered in the hopes of producing a disciple on par with his mentor.
Spider-Punk
Daniel Kaluuya voices Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk in Across the Spider-Verse. Spider-Punk is an outcast who refuses to follow convention, breaking all his rules in the process. Hobie may be a bit of a mess, but he has a strong moral compass and was one of the first Spider-Man versions to speak out against the oppressive regime in Spider-Man 2099. Since Spider-Punk shares Spider-Gwen and Miles Morale’s anti-establishment views, so he becomes an important ally for both of them in the film, setting the stage for his return in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Pavitr Prabhakar: Spider-Man India
One of the most powerful Spider-Men in Across the Spider-Verse is Pavitr Prabhakar, played by Deadpool actor Karan Soni. When the Spot travels across dimensions, Pavitr allies up with Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen to stop him. However, this conflict changes the Canon of Spider-Man India, putting the future of his planet at risk.
Manhattan, a mashup of New York and Mumbai, India, appears to be the setting for the events on Earth-5101. In this scenario, Pavitr’s girlfriend’s dad was supposed to die protecting his kid from falling debris. However, Miles and Gwen’s arrival halted this “canon event,” which may have spelled the end for Earth-50101.
Spider-Man 2099
Spider-Man 2099, played by Miguel O’Hara, is a minor enemy from the future in Across the Spider-Verse. In the film, he is the head of the Spider Society, a group of Spider-Totems from other dimensions that work together to protect the fabric of reality. Unfortunately, O’Hara considers Miles Morales dangerous because his Spider-Man powers make him an outlier.
Despite the movie’s best efforts to explain why Miguel O’Hara is so keen about having Miles endure his father’s death, Spider-Man 2099 is positioned as an antagonist throughout Across the Spider-Verse. As the film’s protagonist, Miles, ignores O’Hara’s warnings about what occurred when O’Hara tried to influence a canon event, the writer/director holds Miles responsible for stopping an alternate reality from getting its own Spider-Man by receiving powers from a mutant spider.
Spider-Man ’67
One of the most memorable moments from the end credits of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), which also happens to be the film’s final appearance in the real world, is the first animated Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe being extremely angry over being pointed at. The inconsistency of the webbing on his outfit is a telltale sign of him.
Takuya Yamashiro
Motocross racer and son of astronomer Dr. Hiroshi Yamashiro, Takuya Yamashiro was the Spider-Man of his world. During the “Spider-Verse” storyline, Spider-Man and Spider-Girl from Earth-616 and Spider-Woman from Earth-65 recruited Takuya from Earth-51778 to fight the Inheritors.
The Spider-Mobile
One of the strangest yet most recognizable aspects of Spider-Man’s comic book history is the Spider-Mobile (or Spider-Buggy). The car’s colors represent the one superhero who doesn’t require a vehicle (and who, in his human guise, doesn’t even have a driver’s license). The Spider-Mobile, which Spider-Man and his closest friend, the Human Torch, built, debuted in “Amazing Spider-Man” #130 in 1974 and was eventually rendered useless in the next 30 issues.
Last Stand Spider-Man
Peter Parker from Earth-312500 is an older, more jaded version of the character whose life ultimately diverges dramatically from that of Peter Parker from Earth-616. The original appearance of this Spider-Man in J. Amazing Spider-Man #58, by Michael Straczynski, John Romita Jr., and John Heck, was presented to Peter in a vision by Madame Webb. To revenge the deaths of Mattie Franklin and his clone Kaine, Peter murdered Kraven the Hunter in this vision.
Spider-Man’s Armored Costume
There have been numerous iterations of Spider-Man’s outfit in the movies, but the comics have provided some truly iconic looks. Most notably, Spider-Man now wears an armored suit to protect himself from the rising gang violence. It appeared in the 1990s on Spider-Man: The Animated Series and is now a fan favorite. Including the original armored outfit in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is not shocking.
Insomniac’s Spider-Man
In 2018, the same year the first film in the Spider-Verse franchise was released, a PlayStation 4 game featuring one of the most popular current takes on the web-slinger was released. (Doesn’t time fly?) Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man was universally hailed as the pinnacle of Spider-Man video games when it was first published.
Doppelganger
Jim Starlin and Ron Lim created Doppelganger, and he made his debut in Infinity War #1 in 1992. He has six arms (as Spider-Man did), sharp fangs, and lethal talons for fingers since Magus developed him to be an almost mindless clone of Spider-Man. He is above Jessica Drew and Spinneret and below Scarlet Spider.
Spider-UK
Malala Windsor, alias Spider-UK, is Earth-835’s official Captain Britain Corp ambassador. In addition, she is a part of Miguel O’Hara’s Earth-928-based Spider Society. Her comment regarding the villain’s moniker during the search for Anomaly Spot caused the other Spiders to laugh and join in. Later, she joined the other Spiders in pursuing Miles Morales.
Spider-Man Noir
Peter B. Parker loses his uncle Ben to the Goblin and his carnie friends on Earth-90214 in the heart of New York City in the 1930s. After that, he decides to volunteer at his aunt’s homeless shelter. Thanks to a spider-like God who bit him, Peter has superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, agility, and durability. His wrists act as launch pads for a stream of liquid silk.
Spider-Man 2211
Spider-Man from the year 2211, Max Borne, is also a TimeSpinner whose mission is to keep the Marvel chronology running smoothly. His crimson mechanical limbs extend from a unit on his back, and his helmet features six eyes. To prevent the Hobgoblin of 2211 from wiping reality with her retcon bombs, he engages in combat with her. During Miles’s escape from the Spider-Society, he appears in Across the Spider-Verse as the Spider-Man Miles clutches for cover.
Spider-Man Unlimited
Saban Entertainment’s Spider-Man Unlimited debuted on Fox Kids in 1999, presenting the Marvel Comics superhero to a new generation. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse features a return appearance from this Spider-Man iteration, giving longtime fans a chance to relax and reminisce as Sony brings back some old favorites. There was just one season of Spider-Man Unlimited, consisting of thirteen episodes, yet fans clearly remember that version of the hero.
Prince Arachne
The Parkers were a noble family from a distant continent, known for their valor, honor, and loyalty. Benjamin and Richard Parker were killed defending the Kingdom’s boundaries, but not before Richard implored Norman Osborn to look after Peter.
The Scarlet Spider
In Across the Spider-Verse, Ben Reilly, as the Scarlet Spider, makes his long-awaited cinematic debut. The Scarlet Spider, whose voice is provided by Andy Samberg, spends much time ruminating about his troubled background. When Miles tries to change the Spider-Verse Canon, he joins Miguel O’Hara’s strike group.
Spectacular Spider
In 2008’s The Spectacular Spider-Man, the character returned to his origins as a high school student learning the ropes of super heroics while navigating the complications of adolescence, making it both a fan favorite and a fan favorite to hate. Peter is the same geeky, amusing guy we know from our own: still finding his footing as he navigates the fine line between responsibility and power.
Maybelle Reilly: Lady Spider
Maybelle Reilly, a native of a steampunk alternate 19th-century Earth, acquired her amazing abilities after being bitten by her father’s experimental spider. Learning the importance of independence after her father’s death, May fashioned a pair of mechanical arms (resembling the Iron Spider costume of our own Spider-Man) and joined forces with other Spider-People to fight evil across dimensions.
Black Costume Spider-Man
Beautiful sequences of Spider-Men from other universes talking to each other (and then fighting) may be seen at the Spider-Verse hub. One of the most intriguing is the sight of Spider-Man in his black costume, which he first donned in the epic 1984 Secret Wars Marvel event. These moments feature several blink-and-you’ll-miss-it images of iconic and adored iterations of Spider-Man and his most renowned outfits. It turned out to be a symbiote, so he discarded it; nonetheless, it eventually attached itself to Eddie Brock, transforming him into Venom.
Tarantula
Spider-Man from Earth-616, primarily featured in comics for the past 60 years, was the model for Ben Reilly’s creation. However, around the turn of the century, a comic called Ultimate Spider-Man was released, which presented a new Peter Parker from Earth-1610. Tarantula is one clone that appears in Across the Spider-Verse in many forms, the first being as a passenger in Peter Parker’s automobile with Spidercide.
Manga Spider-Man
Marvel has an extensive archive of Manga homages. In 2002, as part of the so-called “New Mangaverse,” a different origin story for Spider-Man appeared in the comics for the first time. In the New Mangaverse, Spider-Man’s uncle and sensei taught him to join the Spider Clan of Ninjas. Since so many readers like this version of Spider-Man, he returned for several pivotal miniseries.
Superior Spider-Man
In Marvel Comics, Otto Octavius, who had changed minds with his youthful adversary Peter Parker, becomes known as The Superior Spider-Man following Parker’s death in 2012. Inspired by Parker’s dying request, Octavius decides to use his newfound abilities for good and take on the mantle of the Superior Spider-Man, sworn to the defense of New York City. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse features a similar version in its dramatic pursuit sequences with the Spider-Society. In this issue, he is simply shown as Peter Parker’s Doppelganger, but in the following issues, he is given a name, a superhero identity, and a past.
Metro Boomin Spiderman
Perhaps one of the more intriguing Spider-Man spinoffs is Metro Spider-Man, who has a vocal appearance from American DJ and record producer Metro Boomin. The Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack features contributions by Metro Boomin, assuring the show’s usual high standard for musical accompaniment. The fact that Spider-Man’s Metro Boomin counterpart is seen informing him there’s “nowhere to run” within the movie itself is a great Easter egg, even though this is later proven false.
Sun Spider
Charlotte Webber is one of the modern Spider-characters enlisted as Spider-Totems to aid with the events across the Spider-Verse. However, she stands out since she is one of the few disabled heroes; she has Ehlers-Danlos disease and, as a result, requires the use of a wheelchair or crutches even while she is in costume.
Earth-65’s Peter Parker
Spider-Gwen’s origin story was teased once more in the film’s second teaser. On Earth-65, their home world, she held Peter Parker as he passed away. Instead of becoming Spider-Man, this Peter Parker was transformed into the Lizard and ultimately killed by Gwen Stacy at his high school’s prom. Spider-Gwen would draw strength from his sacrifice.
The Future Foundation Spider-Man
After the Human Torch was presumed dead after being transported to the Negative Zone, Spider-Man replaced him as a member of the Fantastic Four in the comics. He switched to a new team jersey, a sleek white design with a modern spider logo. During Miles Morales’s effort to flee, the Spider-Man from the Future Foundation is seen coming to his aid.
Spider-man Tron Costume
In 2010, Marvel Comics released several “Tron” variations, in which familiar characters wore outfits reminiscent of the Tron video game. Spider-Man’s suit, which has an incredible array of high-tech abilities (including stealth), was included in the narrative. The colors shift to reflect the currently active features. In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the nexus momentarily shows a Spider-Man dressed as Tron.
Spider-Therapist
One of the most out-of-the-ordinary moments in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has a Spider-Verse iteration having treatment with a Spider-Therapist. An army of Spider-People is about to crash through the wall, but not before the Spider-Therapist and his “Spider-Patient” exchange a few words. The Spider-Therapist already knows the “Spider-Patient’s” background since it is also his own. At the same time, this is only a funny cutaway during Miles’ long chase.
Iron Spider
The Iron Spider suit, designed by Tony Stark and featuring amazingly advanced technology (including a web glide so Spider-Man didn’t need to rely on web-slinging), is accurately shown in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Though other Spider-Man variants seem to have altered the designs of other pre-existing variants, the original comic book design had only three, not four, extensible limbs. Thus, this makes sense.
Spider-Cop
The concept of Spider-Cop has become legendary in Spider-Man canon, even appearing in the most recent Spider-Geddon crossover. He has arrived in the Spider-Verse and works as a traffic cop. His part is little but excellent, mostly as a humorous Easter egg.
The Cowboy Spider-Man Aka Web-Slinger
It’s no wonder that Dan Slott would create this cowboy Spider-Man from the Wild West planet of Earth-31913, given that he previously returned the Two-Gun Kid to Marvel in the pages of his She-Hulk run. Web-slinger’s backstory is shrouded in mystery, but his close relationship with his Spider-Horse is not. The Ultimate Spider-Man animated series featured the web-slinger’s longest and most prominent appearance, as the two heroes worked together to save a frontier town from Doc Ock Holiday.
Captain Spider: Flash Thompson
In an alternate universe, Flash Thompson unwittingly acquires Spider-Man powers after the radioactive spider bites him. Watcher Uatu relates the tale. Who was the burly Spider-Man we spotted out and about in a letterman’s jacket? We think he references “Captain Spider,” Peter’s high school bully Flash Thompson’s take on Spider-Man. His debut was in the film “What If?” 1977’s Number Seven spot.
Spyder-Knight
“Spyder-Knight,” the name given to Spider-Man in his medieval knight guise, first appeared in an episode of “Ultimate Spider-Man” in 2015. We’re assuming the letter “Y” in “Spyder” has a more vintage feel. This Peter Parker lived during the period of King Arthur, and the magician Merlyn served as his guide. The worldwide poster for Spider-Verse shows him in clear detail. His position is ideal, sandwiched between PS4 Peter and Spinneret.
Spider-Monkey
Anthropomorphic apes inhabit Earth-8101, which should not be mistaken for the Earth seen in Marvel’s 1970s licensed version of the Planet of the Apes film. Like the human counterpart to his powers, Spider-Monkey was eager to kill in battle and possessed a radically different mentality from that of the average monkey. During the Spider-Verse crossover, he died heroically after helping to resolve a problem that affected several dimensions.
Bag-Man
When Peter Parker lost his Spider-Man suit in the comics, he borrowed the Fantastic Four’s garb and improvised a mask to wear. The over-the-top Bag-Man outfit is often considered Spider-Man’s worst getup, yet it also has fans. Due to Sony’s inability to get the Fantastic Four’s licensing, several changes were made to the source material for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. This version of Spider-Man has the classic costume from the comics, complete with the paper bag mask.
Spider-Cat
Like Spider-Man, he happens to be a feline. Spider-Cat is the usual pet of a group of Earth-999 gamers, and his powers came from an encounter with one of the mysterious Spider-Totems, according to a legend that makes as much sense as any other legend about the Spider-Totems. When his Earth-616 counterpart was killed by the vampire Morlun in the events leading up to 2014’s Spider-Verse, he donned his outfit and fought crime against tiny animals and birds.
Spider-Rex
T. is a shy native of Earth-66’s ancient past. Rex Pter Ptarker encountered a spider-filled meteorite by happenstance, which endowed him with incredible spider-like abilities. Parker learned a valuable lesson about responsibility when he mistakenly let a tree limb kill Norrannosaurman during an early combat between the two. New to the comic book universe, Ptarker has already traveled to our world and had a near-death experience with our own Norman Osborn, yet he still manages to combat crime as the Spider-Man with the most teeth.
Wolf Spider
One of the Spider-Man alternates in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse changes into a wolf, albeit it’s easy to miss. The look may be an homage to Spider-Man Unlimited, but Werewolf Spider-Man is from Marvel Zombies vs. The Army of Darkness. This mobile game featured a team effort among many incarnations of Spider-Man, including a werewolf.
Widow The Spider-Horse
Widow the Spider-Horse, a horse from Earth-31913, and his rider, Patrick O’Hara, a.k.a. the Web-Slinger, are among the versions that smash into Spider-Therapist’s office. Patrick and Widow first appear in the 2015 installment of The Amazing Spider-Man, as Miles Morales convinces them to join his web-slinger team. In the film, however, Miles is introduced to the Spider-Society and sees the horse and rider team as a reminder of how different certain Spider-Man varieties may be. Miles is also allowed to inquire why the horse must wear a mask.
Andrew Garfield
As Miguel O’Hara explains the idea of canon events, which occur in every Spider-Man timeline (such as the deaths of loved ones), clips from several Spider-Man continuity plays in the background. Miles discovers that each Spider-Person must grieve in their own unique way in order to maintain harmony between dimensions. Scenes from “The Amazing Spider-Man” are shown, including Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) seeing Captain George Stacy’s (Denis Leary) death.
Tobey Maguire
Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) and Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire, Sony’s original trilogy) make cameo appearances. The scene is where Uncle Ben (Robertson) die in the terrible sequence from the first “Spider-Man.”
Tom Holland
Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) from the Marvel Cinematic Universe briefly appear. Miguel O’Hara discusses Doctor Strange and the “little nerd” from Earth-199999 as he describes the various problems he and the Spider Society have had to cope with in the universe. While the characters themselves aren’t shown, “Across the Spider-Verse” demonstrates that the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” have had repercussions throughout the multiverse.
Lego Spider-Man
The stop-motion style used to show the action on Earth-13122 is reminiscent of the work Phil Lord and Chris Miller did together on the excellent 2010s animated film The LEGO Movie. We know almost little about this reality other than it features a Spider-Man variation and J. J.K. Simmons portrays Jonah Jameson. Simmons, who seems to be ubiquitous across all timelines.
Spider-Byte
Margo Kess, also known as Spider-Byte, is a new character played by Amandla Stenberg in Across the Spider-Verse. Margo manages the Spider Society’s teleportation chamber and other duties as Spider-Byte from the comfort of her home, utilizing a holographic avatar. Spider-Gwen recruits her to join the renegade team and aid Miles Morales. She is just another high school student in the real world, but she saves the day as Spider-Byte online. Given the nature of her native realm, Spider-Byte naturally assumes responsibility for the Spider-Society’s more complex technical endeavors.
Spiderling & Spinneret
Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows was released as a peace offering, presenting an alternate timeline in which Peter and Mary Jane were still married and had a superpowered child whom they used to combat crime as Spinneret. In Across the Spider-Verse, she briefly appears with her signature red hair and white costume.
Spider-Ham
In 1983, writer Tom DeFalco and illustrator Mark Armstrong debuted their animal-based spoof of Spider-Man in a humorous one-shot comic book, Marvel Tails. Peter Porker, a native of Earth-831, is a humanoid pig who was reborn as an ordinary house spider after being bitten by a radioactive pig scientist in the aftermath of an atomic hairdryer accident. In the 2023 sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Peter Porker has a much smaller role than in the 2018 animated feature.
SP//dr. Peni Parker
When she was nine years old, Peni Parker lost her father, the SP//dr suit pilot. After being told she was the only one who could continue the experiment by her uncle Ben and aunt May, she agreed to take on the burden and let the radioactive spider that made up the other half of SP//dr’s CPU bite her. The first of the three to make an appearance in “Across the Spider-Verse” is Peni, who is shown piloting a sleeker, more advanced replica of her companion spider’s robotic SP//dr outfit (after the original was destroyed in the last fight of the previous film). This new mechanical outfit resembles its comic book inspiration, which first appeared in “Edge of Spider-Verse” #5 (July 2014).
Spider-Man for the PlayStation
The Peter Parker and Miles Morales designs from Sony’s PlayStation 4 games make cameo appearances in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The Spider-Man video game series has been extremely successful for Marvel, so much so that the comics have continued the characters’ adventures. It’s awesome that Peter and Miles from those acclaimed character incarnations have been given their due in the Spider-Verse.
Spidercide
Anger caused a genetic change that turned Spidercide into a murdering machine. A member of the Scriers sect found his remains after an explosion in a propane tanker reportedly killed him and brought him back to life. He went back to the Jackal who had given him the Spidercide suit. Fans saw a few names and Earth designations explaining each variant when Miles Morales landed on Earth-928 and began exploring the Spider Society headquarters.
Earth-X Spider-Man
Despite being recruited by Miguel O’Hara of Earth-928B to join his Multiversal Spider-Society, Peter continued to protect New York on his planet as one of its greatest defenders. Peter spent the following three years getting in shape and eventually joining the NYPD with dignity. Peter went to a radioactive scientific fair. Peter’s mutation and subsequent acquisition of superhuman abilities were caused after he was bitten by a spider that had wandered into the path of freely flowing radiation during the experiment.
