Updated on:

David Corenswet will play the Man of Steel in DC’s upcoming “Superman: Legacy.” Director of the “Superman” reboot and co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, confirmed the news on Tuesday. Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Maisel in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” will also play Lois Lane. It’s not only that they’re great performers, but that they’re great people, too, Gunn said. The actor reminds one of a youthful Henry Cavill, who played Superman in earlier films.

Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, a storytelling initiative by the studio’s co-heads of film, including Legacy as one of its main projects. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and The Authority are two such examples.

According to Gunn, Clark Kent/Superman, played by Corenswet, is raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Kansas, where he must reconcile his Kryptonian origins with his human upbringing. Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane of The Daily Planet, will co-star with Corenswet.

The filming of Superman: Legacy will commence in the early months of 2024, with a release date of July 11, 2025. Gunn has cast Lois and Clark, but he’s still looking for actors to play other legendary Superman characters like Lex Luthor and the superhero team The Authority, who will likely make a cameo in the film before getting their movie.

Who is David Corenswet, DC’s new Superman?

David Corenswet, an actor born on July 8, 1993, is 29 years old and has been in numerous Netflix originals in recent years. The Philadelphia native and Juilliard alum’s first professional acting gig was in the title role of All My Sons by Arthur Miller when he was just nine years old.

Corenswet graduated from the Juilliard School of Acting in New York in 2016. In 2014, he and Adam Langdon launched a web series of comedic skits called “Moe & Jerryweather,” in which he appeared. Following his breakthrough role in The Politician, Corenswet released Hollywood, which used actual and fictitious individuals to reimagine the 1940s as a more progressive age.

What has David Corenswet been in?

Corenswet’s acting resume pre-House of Cards includes Elementary, Affairs of State, and Instinct roles. He had a major role in Ryan Murphy’s The Politician in 2019, and I’ll have another major role in Murphy’s 2020 series Hollywood. In the former, high school senior Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) plots out his entire life to become president of the United States one day. Hollywood is about Jack Costello (Corenswet), a struggling actor in Los Angeles after World War II who dreams of becoming a movie star because of his excellent looks but ends up as a glorified gigolo at a gas service station.

The actor has recently been seen in Look Both Ways on Netflix and Pearl by A24, in addition to his recurrent role on HBO’s We Own This City. Corenswet makes his feature picture directorial debut with Superman: Legacy. His next work may be seen in The Answers on FX, The Greatest Hits on Searchlight, Lady in the Lake on AppleTV+, Twisters on Universal, Warner Bros., and Amblin Entertainment.

How did he end up playing Superman?

Screen tests for the role of Superman, requiring Corenswet to appear both in costume and regular clothes, were placed during the weekend of June 17. Emma Mackey, who was up for the part of Lois Lane before Rachel Brosnahan won it, co-starred alongside him. The roles of Kal-El and Superman were discussed with Tom Brittney and Nicholas Hoult.

He talked about wanting to play the iconic hero in an interview with Entertainment Weekly published in 2019. “My far-fetched goal is to play Superman,” Corenswet told the magazine. A more upbeat, retro-styled take on Superman would be great. Though I admire Henry Cavill’s somber performance, I hope the sequel is brighter.

Previous Superman actors

The late Christopher Reeves debuted as Superman in the 1978 film of the same name. His popular series has now reached its third installment. In Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns (2006), Brandon Routh took up the role of Superman. The movie wasn’t a blockbuster hit. Therefore, it won’t be the first of a series. This explains why he only showed up in that one film. Henry Cavill is the most current actor to play Superman, having done so in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013), Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Justice League (2017).

What we know about “Superman: Legacy”

What we know about “Superman: Legacy” so far is that James Gunn’s reboot of “Superman” will not be an origin tale and that Gunn preferred to cast a main actor in his 30s rather than his 20s, but that the plot still centers on Kal-El trying to come to terms with his Kryptonian background while still embracing his humanity. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way,” said DC Studios, “guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old fashioned.”

This is a fresh start for the franchise. Thus, a new cast was necessary. Henry Cavill played Superman in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” and subsequent films like “Batman v. Superman” and the notorious “Justice League,” but with the cancellation of that sweeping DC universe, Gunn was able to start again with “Superman: Legacy.”

Just before the writers’ strike, Gunn finished the first draft of the “Legacy” script, and early pre-production is starting in preparation for a 2024 shoot. The premiere date of the film is set for July 11, 2025. Gunn and co-DC president Peter Safran are directing a massive DC Universe story arc, of which “Superman: Legacy” is merely the first installment.

If everything works out, Corenswet will be with us for a long time.
